The 27-meter Duyung Baru is an old-style Indonesian spice trading vessel. This liveaboard offers personalized and reasonably priced diving trips for small groups or families. The owners and operators are Volker Korth, a German national and his Indonesian wife, Yani Korth, who have been passionate tour operators in Indonesia since 1998. They cruise between the iconic dive areas of Komodo National Park, South Sulawesi and Wakatobi. The very high level of customer satisfaction proves that comfort and enjoyability can go hand in hand with affordability. The length of the organized cruises varies between 6 and 10 nights. Possible charters can be shorter.

ACCOMMODATION

The ship is made of quality teak wood, oozing a sphere of tropical luxury on the interior. There are 3 cabins for a total of 6 guests with plenty storage facilities for their luggage. 2 private double cabins contain a queen-sized bed, ideal for couples or friends. The twin share cabin contains two single beds, ideal for individual travellers. Each air-conditioned cabin has an en-suite with a shower and private toilet. All of the beds have high-quality mattresses. The cabins are cleaned and maintained each morning.

COMFORT

The lounge and dining salon are comfortable gathering places. As is the sun deck with shaded area. A welcoming English, German and Indonesian speaking local crew of 5 guarantees a truly personalized service. Free Internet is available when in range.

CATERING

Yani’s kitchen proudly prepares delightful fresh food all day long. She provides her guests with authentic Indonesian, Japanese and western cuisine. A light breakfast is served before the first dive. After the morning dive, she serves a full Mediterranean buffet breakfast with freshly baked bread. Lunch is served after the second dive. Dinner is always festive and can include on-board barbecues and delectable desserts. Fresh fruits, sweet and savoury snacks are on offer in between meals. Yani will gladly cater to your special wishes and personal diets.

DIVING

Diving cruises with small groups have the advantage to be flexible. We are able to adjust our itineraries to everyone’s preference and quickly change plans if opportunities arise or conditions change. The dive deck has all the amenities for comfortable diving, including nitrox and rental equipment. Land excursions, diving courses, fishing and snorkelling are alternative activities offered to our guests. We look forward to welcoming you on Duyung Baru!

Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Labuan Bajo, arrival and boarding

Days 2 – 6: Sebayur Island, Tatawa Island, Manta point, Gili Lawa Laut & Gili Lawa Darat, Komodo National Park & Trekking. Rinca Nord/Loh Buaya Komodo Channel

Day 7: Labuan Bajo: We will arrive in the morning in Labuan Bajo. You will be served breakfast and afterwards transferred to the airport and checked in by Duyungs Baru’s staff.

Your time on the Duyung and the diving in the Komodo National Park will be wonderful, where some of the best diving in the world will be done.

So what’s the diving like? Many of the dive sites such as Castle Rock, Crystal Boomi, Batu Bolong, the Cauldron and the passage are true “world class” dives when dived under the right conditions. Other sites rate as excellent diving.

The corals here are spectacular and rarely in Indonesia have we seen so little evidence of fish bombing. The reefs in many cases can be considered “pristine” and are alive with all the usual reef-dwelling creatures. Some sites offer excellent “macro” life, with the possibility of seeing seahorse, frogfish, leaf fish and a large variety of nudibranch.

From June to September the surface water conditions are best and on many days, flat calm. Visibility is good anything from 15 – 40 meters. Water temperature varies from 24 – 28 degrees C depending on the tide.

Marine Life: During our dives, we have encountered amazing marine life, large amounts of sharks, mainly whitetip and grey reef, large shoals of jacks, snapper, surgeonfish and fusiliers. Large groupers can be seen on most dives and we have also seen some of the biggest hump head wrasse we have seen for years. Turtles abound, Manta rays are common and eagle rays are spotted regularly.

Currents can make diving “tricky”, but for more experienced divers, exciting and great fun. There are dive sites suitable for all levels of diver, from experienced open water diver and above. However, there is no doubt that the largest shoals, the biggest fish, the most sharks and generally the most exhilarating dives are where the currents are at the strongest. Therefore, we would suggest getting the best out of the area; the diving is not for newly qualified or inexperienced divers or for divers who are not capable of a bit of hard fining on some occasions.
